BOTOX
Smoothes out fine lines and wrinkles.
Facial lines and wrinkles are caused by contraction of the facial muscles and loss of elasticity of the skin to different degrees. Botox is a registered trademark name of a preparation of Botulinum Toxin A. Other trade names include Dysport and Xeomin. This toxin paralyses the facial muscles and weakens the muscles creating a smooth look.
The best areas for treatment with botulinum toxin lie in the upper third of the face, for correction of vertical frown lines between the eyebrows, horizontal furrows on the forehead, crow’s feet, and the bands of the neck.
A local anaesthetic cream may be applied but the procedure can be done without it. Injections are given into the area for the duration of applied. The procedure takes 10 to 30 minutes. Thereafter only the small pinpricks are visible or light bruising. Some patients experience a slight headache during the first week.
There are no permanent risks in healthy individuals. Asymmetry is possible. Drooping of the eyelid can occur in one to five percent of patients; it always recovers spontaneously within three to four weeks. Effects are seen in 3 or 4 days and last 4 to 6 months.
