GYNAECOMASTIA SURGERY (MALE BREAST REDUCTION)
Gynaecomastia is overly-developed male breasts.
The male breast may be enlarged due to drugs, ageing, or hormonal imbalances. The masculine appearance is lost. The enlargement may be in the breast tissue only or in the breast tissue with excess skin.
Consultation with a Plastic Surgeon is essential to assess where the excess tissue lies and what type of operation the patient needs. The excess breast tissue is removed using liposuction and/or surgery.
The procedure is performed under general anaesthesia and can take between 45 mins to 2 and a half hours depending on what type of operation is performed. It is usually an outpatient procedure.
Postoperatively there is temporary swelling, bruising and numbness. Nipple sensation changes.
Complications may include bleeding, infection, asymmetry, poor scarring and contour irregularity.
Time to return to work is usually 7 days after the procedure. Strenuous activity can be resumed after three weeks.
Results are usually permanent unless there is massive weight gain.
