BREAST REDUCTION
Very large breasts, also called hypermastia may cause back, shoulder and or neck pain. They also may cause embarrassment and or limit clothing choice and physical exercise. Breast reduction also known as reduction mammoplasty reduces the size and improves the shape of the breast while alleviating the symptoms of hypermastia.
Consultation with a Plastic Surgeon is essential to determine the amount of breast tissue to be removed and the type of the scars that can be expected. The duration of the operation can be between 2 to 4 hours depending on the size of the breasts. Overnight stay will depend on the surgeon. Dr Vadia will factor in the technique used, the level of patient support and local facilities.
Risks of the surgery include: unfavourable scarring, delayed wound healing, loss of the nipple and breast tissue and unsatisfactory shape, loss of nipple sensation and inability to breastfeed.
Recovery occurs between 7 to 14 days. Strenuous physical activity is discouraged for 3 to 6 weeks after surgery.
Most patients are relieved of their symptoms and are happy with the results.
